A chequerboard pool deck of alternating pale stone slabs and artificial turf squares, lit at dusk

Checker Board Pool Deck

A pool deck laid out square by square.

Project Overview

A Chequerboard
Pool Deck in Stone and Turf

Full chequerboard: alternating stone slabs and turf squares running from the house out to the pool, uplit at night, against a Mediterranean-style elevation. This is the most graphic thing we build, and the one that most obviously could not be done in natural grass — the squares would never hold their lines.

Every square has to be identical and every joint has to line through in both directions, so the whole deck is set out from one datum before a single slab is bedded. Each turf square is cut to its opening, based individually and anchored on all four sides, which is what keeps the pattern sharp instead of letting the greens creep over the stone.
