Urine does not smell like much on its own. It starts to smell once bacteria break the urea in it down into ammonia, and ammonia off-gasses faster as the air gets hotter and wetter. That is why a back yard that was fine all February can turn on you in July with the same dog and the same routine. So a yard that smells is usually not a sign you have been slacking. It is a sign that something in the surface has filled up, worn out or stopped draining, and the Houston summer is what makes you notice.
We start with a look, not a quote. We find the spots your dog uses, flood a test patch to see how fast the water leaves, pull the fibers apart to see what is left of the infill, and check the backing. Then we clean: cross-brush the pile, lift out debris and the solids that get ground down into the backing, sanitize, and treat the surface with an enzyme product made for turf. Most yards are fixable from the top and we do it in one visit. The one yard we cannot fix that way is the one where urine has soaked into a base that was never built to drain, and we will tell you that on the visit instead of selling you a treatment that was never going to work.
What Can I Expect From Deep Cleaning, Odor Treatment & Infill in Houston?
We look before we touch anything. We walk the yard with you, find the spots your dog actually uses, flood a test patch and watch how fast the water leaves, pull the fibers apart to see what is left of the infill, and check whether the backing is fully perforated. Then we clean. The surface gets cross-brushed to stand the fibers back up, debris and ground-in solids get lifted out of the pile and the backing, and the whole area gets sanitized and treated with an enzyme product made for turf. If the fill in the traffic lanes is spent we tell you what it would take to replace it. You get the routine in writing before we leave, and the assessment itself is free.
Usually no. Almost all of this work happens from the top, and most yards never need a seam opened. There are two exceptions and we will say so on the visit rather than after we have your deposit. If an edge or a seam has come loose we may lift that section to re-anchor it. And if urine has soaked into a base that was never built to drain, nothing we apply from the surface will reach it. That yard has to be lifted and the base rebuilt, and no amount of cleaning or new infill is going to change that. Anyone who sells you a treatment for that yard is taking your money and you will be smelling the same thing next summer.
It happens more often than people expect, which is why we check before we quote. Water that sits under the turf after every rain will go sour on its own with no dog involved. So will the strip of bare soil along a fence or a bed where runoff collects and never dries. We have also traced a smell to a trash or compost area upwind, a neighbour's yard on the other side of the fence, and a drain or clean-out near the patio. If the yard is not the cause we will tell you that and we will not sell you a treatment for it.
You do, and it is not much work. Pick the solids up daily, rinse the whole surface with a hose on a set day, and run the enzyme cleaner on the cycle we leave you. We will not print an interval on this page, because the honest answer depends on how many dogs use the yard, how big it is, and whether the routine actually gets done. We set it after we have seen the yard. What we will say plainly is that this is a surface plus a routine, not a permanent fix: stop the routine and the smell comes back, whatever we put down.

Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

What Does It Cost To Have Artificial Grass Deep Cleaned And Deodorized?
It depends on the size of the yard, how many dogs use it and which of four fixes it turns out to need, so we price it after we have seen it and never over the phone. A deep clean and sanitize on a sound yard is the cheapest visit. An enzyme treatment with a routine costs a little more. Pulling spent infill out of the traffic lanes and replacing it costs more again, and drainage work or lifting the turf sits at the top. The same smell can come from a rinse nobody is doing or from a base that has to come out, and those two are nowhere near each other in price.
Price the visit against the alternative, which is pulling the yard out and starting over. That is the whole reason the assessment comes first: a yard that needs a clean and a routine should never be sold a replacement, and a yard whose base is saturated should never be sold another treatment. If the fill in the lanes is the real problem we can handle it as an infill addition, and if the water is not leaving we can price drainage solutions at the same time. If this is a kennel, a daycare yard or an apartment dog park rather than a back yard, that job is a system rather than a visit, so start with our commercial pet turf odor control systems instead. Why Does My Artificial Grass Smell Worse When It Rains Or Gets Hosed Down?
Because water wakes up what is already in there. Urine does not smell like much on its own. It starts to smell once bacteria break the urea in it down into ammonia, and ammonia off-gasses faster as the air gets hotter and wetter. Rain or a rinse re-wets the dried residue sitting in the fibers, the infill and the backing, and it comes off all at once, which is why a yard that was quiet in February can be hard to stand next to after an afternoon storm in July. If it fades within the hour, that is normal and it is surface residue. If it hangs around, the water is not leaving fast enough and that is telling you something about what is underneath.
What The Water Is Doing
Dried urine residue in the fibers, the infill and the backing goes back into solution the moment it is wet, so what was releasing slowly all week releases at once. Warm, wet Houston air then holds it near the ground instead of carrying it off, which is why the same yard reads worse in July than in February.
What It Tells You
How long it lasts is the useful part. A smell that fades within the hour is residue in the surface and a clean and treat handles it. A smell that hangs on, or water still standing an hour after the hose goes off, means liquid is sitting in the layer under the turf instead of leaving, and that is a drainage problem before it is an odor problem.
What It Does Not Mean
It does not mean the turf is ruined, and it does not mean a treatment failed. Odor treatment is a surface plus a routine: stop the routine and the smell comes back, whatever we put down. And if urine has saturated a base that was never built to drain, nothing applied from the top will reach it, so the turf has to be lifted and the base rebuilt. Treating odor is also not disinfecting: we make no claim that any of this kills or prevents disease. Those are two different jobs.

How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
