A play yard on licensed child care or school property has a harder job than a backyard swing set. It takes hundreds of feet a day, it gets inspected, and the surfacing under the equipment is part of what you are held to. Loose fill is usually what fails first. Engineered wood fiber and rubber mulch migrate out from under the swings and the slide exits, thin out in the exact spots that matter most, and have to be raked level and topped back up again and again. After a Gulf Coast downpour the low spots hold water and turn to mud.
We build for that traffic instead. We walk the site, note the fall height of every piece of equipment, and spec a shock pad and turf that carry the rating your equipment calls for. Under it goes an engineered aggregate base, compacted and graded to move water, because Houston gumbo clay barely takes water in and shrinks and swells with it. You get a written scope you can drop into a bid packet, the manufacturer's surfacing test documents for your files, and a surface that looks the same in May as it did the day we handed it over.
What Can I Expect From Commercial Playground Turf in Houston?
It can, and the answer depends on your equipment as much as on the turf. Licensed centers in Texas follow the Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers (26 TAC Chapter 746), which cover outdoor activity space and resilient surfacing under climbing and swinging equipment. Read the current chapter yourself, or ask your licensing representative, because the wording is theirs and not ours. What we do is build the surface to the fall-height rating your equipment manufacturer specifies, then hand you the manufacturer's surfacing test documentation so the paperwork is in your file before an inspector asks for it.
Turf over a shock pad is firm and stable, which is the property a wheelchair needs and the one loose mulch does not have. Surface accessibility is measured by a lab test, ASTM F1951, and the route into and through a play area is covered by the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. We spec systems whose manufacturer publishes that test data, pass the documents to you and your design team, and build the surface flush at every edge so there is no lip to catch a wheel. Your architect or your inspector signs off on the finished route, not us.
Three layers under the grass, and the ground is where most of the work happens. We excavate to depth and build a compacted aggregate base graded to move water, because Houston gumbo clay barely takes water in and shrinks and swells with it. On top of the base goes the shock pad, which is the layer that does the fall protection and is sized to your equipment. The turf is glued and seamed over the pad, edged into nailer boards or concrete so nothing lifts, and infilled. Get the base wrong and the surface ruts and dips inside a season, no matter how good the grass is.
Day to day it is a blower, a hose, and spot treatment for spills. The turf backing is perforated and the base under it is open-graded, so liquid passes straight through instead of sitting on the surface where mulch would hold it. For sanitizing, use a turf-safe product your manufacturer approves, because household bleach and some disinfectants damage fibers and can void your coverage. Add a quick walk of the use zones to the safety checklist your staff already runs, and have the infill groomed in the high-traffic spots a few times a year.

Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

How Much Does It Cost to Turf a Commercial Playground?
There is no flat per square foot price for a commercial play yard, because the surfacing has to match the equipment standing on it. A tot lot with a low playhouse and a school playground with a tall climber are two different builds, and the shock pad under the turf is the biggest reason why. We price it after we have walked the site and measured the equipment.
