Turf Infill Installation in Houston, TX
Infill is the layer that sits down between the blades doing the quiet work, usually a kiln-dried silica sand on a landscape lawn and a zeolite or coated product where pets are involved. It weights the turf to the base, it gives the surface its feel underfoot, and it packs in around each fiber so the blade has something to lean on and stands back up after somebody walks over it. It is also the part of the system that moves. Traffic pushes it out of the lanes and into the dips, it settles as the years go by, a zeolite fill fills up and stops working, and a planter or a patio chair presses the pile flat wherever it sits. None of that means the grass failed. It means there is less holding the blades up than there was on the day it went down, and a lawn with thin fill looks dark and flat and feels hard.
We read the lawn before we price anything. We part the fiber out in the traffic lanes and again in a corner nothing touches, so we can see what is left where it matters instead of guessing from the patio. We check the seams and the perimeter, walk the surface for dips and ripples, and brush a test patch to find out whether the blades will stand back up at all. If the fill has moved or settled, the work is a groom and a top-up: the fiber gets lifted and decompacted, the new fill goes down, and a power broom drives it in around the base of each blade rather than leaving it sitting on the surface. If we find a failing base, or fiber crushed flat for too many years to recover, we say that on the visit. That is the whole reason the assessment comes first.
What Can I Expect From Turf Infill in Houston?
A landscape lawn needs it. Infill is the ballast: it weights the turf down to the base, it gives the surface its feel underfoot, and it packs in around each fiber so the blade has something to lean on and comes back up after somebody walks over it. Take that away and the pile lies down, the lawn reads dark because you are looking at backing instead of grass, and the seams and edges start to lift because nothing is holding them. There are non-infill products built for specific jobs, and they are a different construction with a different backing and pile, not a normal lawn with the sand left out. If a landscape turf was specified with infill and does not have it, that is a missing layer, not a design choice.
We measure it on the visit rather than quote it off a table, because it depends on the pile height, how the fiber is built, how much fill is still down there, and how hard that part of the lawn gets used. Online calculators are built for new turf going down on an empty base, which is a different sum from topping up a lawn that already has some fill in it and has settled unevenly. What matters more than our number is that you get the variables in writing from whoever you hire: the infill product by name, the depth, the pounds per square foot, and when it should be looked at again. Leave those blank on a bid and the cheapest quote wins by putting down the cheapest sand it can find.
Because spreading is only half of it. Infill has to be worked down into the pile so it settles in around the base of each fiber, and it will not get there on its own if the blades are already lying flat and matted. The order matters: the fiber gets brushed and lifted first, then the new fill goes down, then a power broom works it in and stands the blades up as it passes. Sand tipped on top of a matted lawn sits on the surface, blows into the low spots and leaves the lawn looking exactly as flat as it did before. That is also why we brush a test patch before quoting anything, to see whether the fiber will stand back up at all.
Not on its own, and we would rather tell you that up front. Spent infill is one of the reasons a pet surface starts to smell, but it is only one of them, and the others are solids ground down into the backing, a drainage layer that has silted up, and a base holding moisture because it was never built for a daily urine load. New fill on top of any of those three does nothing for the smell, so the smell needs its own diagnosis first. We do that work, and if your yard needs both we will do them on one visit rather than sending you two crews. What we will not do is sell you a top-up as an odor fix.

A Simple Process
From Start to Finish.
Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

How Do You Know When Artificial Turf Needs More Infill?
Look at the busy lanes first, not at the middle of the lawn. Where people cut across, dogs run and a gate swings, the blades lie flat and stay flat after you brush them, the green looks darker and thinner because you are seeing more backing than fiber, and the surface feels hard and shallow underfoot instead of springy. There is a check you can do yourself in a minute. Push your fingers down into the pile in a corner nothing ever touches, then do the same in the middle of the traffic lane, and compare what your fingertips hit. If there is clearly less holding your hand up in the lane, the fill has moved out of it. Ripples and shallow dips that were not there when the turf went down are the other tell, because fill settles over time and traffic pushes it into the low ground.
What You Can See
The lawn reads darker and patchier in the lanes than at the edges, because thin fill lets the blades fold over and you end up looking at backing. Seams and perimeter edges start to stand up or curl. Ripples and shallow dips show up where the ground looks fine underneath.
What You Can Feel
It feels hard and shallow underfoot rather than springy, and you can feel the base through it. Brush a patch flat with your hand: on a lawn with enough fill the blades come back up, and on a lawn without it they stay down. Spots where patio furniture or a planter sits stay pressed flat after you move the piece.
Where To Look First
The path from the back door, the swing of every gate, the strip a dog runs along a fence line, under a trampoline, and the mouth of a play area. Then find a corner nothing walks on and compare. The lanes are where fill leaves first, so a lawn can look fine from the patio and be well down where it counts.

Can You Add Infill To Turf Another Company Installed?
Yes, and most of this work is exactly that. We do not need to know who installed it, and we are not going to make you buy a new lawn from us first. We come out, part the fiber in a few places to see what fill is actually left, walk the surface for low spots, check the seams and the edges, and brush a test patch to see whether the blades stand back up. Then here is the part you should hear from us and not find out later. If the base under the turf is failing, or the fiber has been crushed flat for so long that it has lost its memory and will not come back up when we brush it, new infill on top will not save that lawn. Infill is ballast. It is not a repair for a bad base or for dead yarn. When that is what we find, we say so on the visit instead of selling you sand that was never going to work.

- If the fill has only moved or settled, a groom and a top-up brings the lawn back.

What Does An Infill Top-Up Cost, And How Often Does Turf Need One?
Both answers come out of the same look at your lawn, which is why we publish neither. Price tracks the square footage we are actually treating, how much of the lawn needs it against how much is still fine, the infill the turf calls for, and whether the fiber has to be brushed and decompacted before anything goes down. The interval is set per yard, not off a calendar we hand to everybody, because a shaded side lawn nobody crosses and a daycare play lawn with forty kids on it do not run down at the same rate. We work yours out once we have seen the traffic, and we put it in writing so nobody is guessing next year. The on-site assessment is free.
Whoever you hire, get the variables on paper: the infill product by name, the depth, the pounds per square foot, and when it should be looked at again. Leave those blank and the lowest bid wins with the cheapest sand it can buy. A top-up also sits alongside two other things we do to turf that is already down, so ask us to look at all of it on one visit. If the lawn holds water after a storm, start with turf drainage. If it smells, that is turf cleaning and odor treatment, or, on a commercial kennel or dog yard, pet turf odor control. The assessment costs nothing either way.
