Headwaters, Flood Pool, and Two Sets of Rules
Buffalo Bayou starts here, at the meeting of Willow Fork and Cane Island Branch. Katy is the top of a watershed that runs 53 miles east through Houston, and the ground is almost dead flat. There is a soil series named for the town, and it behaves in a particular way: a sandy loam surface over a slower clay-loam layer that holds water above it after heavy rain and through the cool months.
Barker Reservoir sits just east of Katy, near I-10 and SH 6. It is a dry dam most of the time. During Harvey the Army Corps deliberately held water across roughly 7,000 acres of private land upstream, and later reports counted more than 20,000 homes inside those reservoir flood zones. If your property is in the pool, drainage is not a detail. We check the parcel before we design the base.

Is my Katy address actually inside the City of Katy?
Often it is not. The incorporated city covers about 15 square miles, while the area that uses a Katy mailing address and Katy ISD schools covers roughly 181 square miles across three counties. Most Katy residents live outside city limits. We confirm your jurisdiction during the free visit, because inside the city there is a permit office to deal with and outside it there is not.
My home is in the Barker Reservoir flood pool. Is turf still a good idea?
It can be, and drainage is the whole question. Properties in the pool can be flooded by a controlled release, not just by a storm, so the base under your turf has to drain fast once water drops. We design for that rather than pretending it will not happen. Turf also recovers better than sod after standing water, because there is nothing to rot.
Do you work in the older neighborhoods near downtown Katy?
Yes. The original town grew up around the MKT railroad in the 1890s, and the 1900 Galveston hurricane destroyed all but three of the first homes, so even the historic core is largely post-1900. In our experience those older lots have deeper shade and less uniform grading than the newer subdivisions, so we survey the fall across the yard before quoting.

How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
