That is how we build it. The turf is loose laid over a protection layer and a drainage mat, restrained at the perimeter, so nothing screws or spikes through the waterproofing. What we will not do is promise from a web page that your warranty is safe. Before anything is ordered we put the proposed assembly in front of your roofing contractor of record and the membrane manufacturer, and we install to what they approve in writing. If they will not sign off on an overburden system for your roof, we tell you that instead of installing anyway.
Less than pavers or planters, but it is not nothing, and it goes up when the infill is saturated after a storm. We do not publish a figure here because the only number that counts is the one your structural engineer checks against your deck's design capacity. What we give you is the manufacturer's dry and saturated weight data for the exact product and infill depth we are proposing, in writing, early enough for the engineer to sign off before the order goes in.
Water passes through the perforated backing into a drainage mat that carries it across the deck to the roof drains and scuppers you already have. The mat exists so the turf never sits in standing water. On a Houston roof that matters more than most places, because hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and the assembly has to clear a real downpour rather than a drizzle. We map every drain and scupper before a single roll goes down and we keep those flow paths open.
Not where the assembly can breathe and drain. Mold needs moisture that sits still. The drainage mat holds an air gap under the turf, the backing is permeable, and water leaves instead of pooling, so there is no standing damp layer for it to start in. Houston's dew points make this a fair question rather than a paranoid one. Where it does go wrong is a solid, non-draining underlay laid tight to a flat deck, and that is exactly the assembly we do not build.

Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

A roof is the harshest place you can put turf, and on a rooftop it is reflected light rather than direct sun that does the unusual damage. Glass facades and metal parapets can concentrate sunlight onto one strip of a deck and distort the fibers there while the rest of the roof is perfectly fine. Turf built for rooftops is UV stabilized for full, unshaded exposure, and the manufacturers who take this seriously publish their own coverage for reflective light damage. Rooftop Turf vs. a Green Roof, Pavers and Composite Decking
Turf is the lightest and the lowest upkeep of the four, and it is the only one that gives you an actual lawn to sit on. A green roof gives you real planting and genuine stormwater benefit, but it needs irrigation, growing medium and ongoing horticultural care, and it is far heavier. Pavers are hard wearing and heavy. Composite decking looks good and feels warm underfoot, but it is still a hard surface. Most amenity decks end up using more than one of these, and the honest answer is that turf earns the soft, barefoot, sit-down area while pavers or decking carry the walking routes.

Is Rooftop Turf Safe on an Occupied Amenity Deck?
Yes, on a deck that has been assessed and detailed properly, and the honest version of that answer has three parts: fire, heat and wind. Rooftop amenity spaces often carry grills, fire features and patio heaters. They take unshaded sun all day. They see the highest wind pressure of anywhere on the building, right at the corners and the edges. None of those is a reason to avoid turf on a roof. They are reasons to design for them up front with your code consultant and your structural engineer instead of finding out afterwards.
