Urine does not smell like much on its own. It starts to smell once bacteria break the urea in it down into ammonia, and ammonia off-gasses faster as the air gets hotter and wetter. That is why a Houston pet yard can pass all winter and turn on you in July. A shared commercial surface also takes many times the urine of one back yard, and a small enclosed relief pad with poor airflow concentrates it further. So a smell is usually not a sign your staff is slacking. It is a sign the surface, the infill or the drainage under it was never sized for the load it now carries.
We start with a diagnosis, not a quote. We flood a test area and watch where the water goes and how fast it leaves, pull infill out and look at what is left of it, check whether the backing is fully perforated or punched-hole, and smell the base itself. That tells us which of the four common causes you have: spent or migrated infill, solids ground into the backing, a drainage layer that has silted up, or a base holding moisture. The first three we can fix in place. The last one we cannot, and we will say so on the visit rather than sell you infill that was never going to solve it.
What Can I Expect From Pet Turf Odor Control in Houston?
Something in the system has worn out, and it is almost never the grass itself. Four causes account for most of it. The infill gets spent or kicked out of the busy lanes, so there is nothing left holding the ammonium between rinses. Solid waste gets ground down into the backing by paws and stays there. The drainage layer silts up with fines and dust, so liquid sits instead of leaving. Or the base was built to shed rain and never to take a daily urine load, so it holds moisture and the smell rises back through the turf. Houston then makes it worse on a schedule: ammonia off-gasses faster as heat and humidity climb, which is why the complaints start in June on a yard that was fine in February.
Most of the time we can fix it in place, and we will tell you straight when we cannot. There are four tiers. A deep extraction and sanitize handles a yard where the build is sound and only the surface is loaded. Pulling the spent infill and replacing it handles a yard where the fill is gone, thin or exhausted. Drainage remediation handles a silted layer or a low spot that never empties. But if urine has saturated a base that was never built to drain, or the turf went down on bare clay with punched-hole backing, no amount of new infill on top will fix that. It has to be lifted and rebuilt. Anyone who sells you an infill swap for that yard is taking your money, and you will be smelling the same thing next summer.
For most yards the right infill plus a hose and a real schedule is enough. Hardware earns its place when the load is high or the site fights you, and three things decide it. First, dogs per day against the square footage, because a small pad serving a whole high-rise is a different problem from an acre bark park. Second, airflow: an enclosed courtyard, a breezeway or an indoor kennel traps what an open yard lets go. Third, whether there is a hose bib within reach at all, because a surface nobody can rinse will not stay clean no matter what is in it. Plumbed flush lines and misting heads make sense for kennels, daycare yards and enclosed relief pads. They are usually more than an open apartment dog park needs.
Use an enzyme cleaner made for turf, and keep bleach off it. Enzyme cleaners break the organic urine residue down instead of covering it up, which is why they are the base of nearly every turf care protocol. Dish soap is not a disinfectant and it is hard to rinse out, so the film it leaves behind holds dirt and can make the surface look worse than before. Bleach and strong solvents can damage yarn, backing and seams, and using them can void the manufacturer's warranty on the turf you paid for. If you have to disinfect, ask us which product to buy and what dilution and dwell time to use, and check it against your turf maker's care sheet first. We put the approved products, the mix ratio and the schedule in writing so the janitor closet stops being a guessing game.

A Simple Process
From Start to Finish.
Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

What Does It Cost To Retrofit Odor Control Into An Existing Turf Installation?
It depends on which cause you have, so we price it after the diagnosis and not before. A deep sanitize on a sound yard is the cheapest tier. An infill swap costs more, drainage work more again, and lifting the turf to rebuild the base sits at the top of the range. We will not quote any of it over the phone, because the same smell can come from a rinse schedule nobody is following or from a base that has to come up, and those two are not close in price.
Price each tier against the alternative, which is tearing the surface out and starting over. That is the whole reason the diagnosis comes first: a yard that only needs infill and a schedule should never be sold a replacement, and a yard whose base is saturated should never be sold infill. Comparing The Options
Zeolite, Antimicrobial Infill, Enzyme Cleaner Or A Flush System: Which Do You Actually Need?
Most yards need two of the four, not all four. Zeolite and antimicrobial infill sit down in the surface and work between cleanings. Enzyme cleaner is what someone applies on a schedule. A flush system is hardware you install when the yard is too busy or too enclosed for a hose to keep up. Pick by dog load, airflow and who is actually doing the work, not by what the label on the bottle promises.
- Zeolite infill: a natural mineral that holds the ammonium in urine until you rinse it out. It fills up, so it is a consumable and needs topping up.
- Antimicrobial-coated infill: coated sands sold to slow the bacteria that make the smell. It does nothing about ammonia already sitting in the base.
- Enzyme cleaner: breaks organic urine residue down instead of masking it. This is the routine, and it is the part most yards are missing.
- Flush or misting system: plumbed lines that rinse on a schedule. Worth it for kennels, daycare yards and enclosed pads, usually not for an open dog park.
- None of the four holds up without a rinse schedule and one named person responsible for it.
What To Expect
Does Turf Odor Control Actually Work, And How Long Does It Last?
Yes it works, and no, it is not permanent. An odor system is a surface plus a routine, and the routine is the half people drop. Zeolite holds only so much ammonium before it is full, so it has to be topped up. Antimicrobial coatings act on bacteria, not on ammonia that has already soaked into a base. Stop rinsing and the smell comes back whatever is in the turf. We will not publish a percentage or a number of years for you, because that would mean repeating a manufacturer's marketing claim as if we had measured it ourselves.
What The System Does
Zeolite and coated infills hold ammonium up in the surface so it rinses away instead of building. Flow-through perforated backing and an open drainage layer carry the liquid down and off the site. Enzyme cleaner clears the organic residue left behind.
Where It Stops
No infill pulls ammonia back out of a base it has already soaked into. Nothing on the market keeps working on its own forever. And odor control is not disinfection: we make no claim that turf or any infill kills or prevents disease. Those are two different jobs and two different products.
What Keeps It Working
A written protocol. Solids picked up daily, the surface rinsed on a set schedule, enzyme cleaner on a cycle, and infill topped up before it runs thin. We set the interval for your yard once we know the dog count, and hand it to your staff on paper.
