City parks, medians and civic grounds are the hardest ground your department owns. They get mowed on a schedule you have to fund every single year, they take crowds on event weekends, and in Houston they sit on gumbo clay that holds water long after the rain has stopped. Medians are worse than the rest, because a crew has to close a lane to cut them and the grass still burns out by August. Artificial turf for parks, esplanades and rights-of-way takes the mowing, watering, fertilizing and reseeding off your operating budget and gives you ground that looks the same in February as it does in July.

Public work usually goes out for competitive bid or runs through a purchasing cooperative, and either way we put together the submittal package your specification asks for: product data, warranty documents, material and infill documentation, and installation details your engineer can review. What Can I Expect From Municipal & Government Turf in Houston?
Yes, when the base under it is built for it, and on the Gulf Coast the base is the whole job. Houston gets roughly 50 inches of rain a year, and the heavy clay under most of this region sheds water instead of taking it in. Turf backing is perforated and sits on a compacted, open aggregate base that carries water down and out to whatever outfall the site already uses. Where a park ponds today, we fix it in the grading and the drain lines, sized to the site rather than to a rule of thumb. One thing we will not do is tell you how your city or county will classify the finished surface for impervious cover. That is set by the local drainage criteria manual, and we will work it through with your engineer instead of guessing at it.
It depends on the use, and on a public site infill is a spec decision rather than a default. A general park lawn, median or civic lawn can run a rounded silica sand for ballast and fiber support. A municipal dog park does better with an antimicrobial, zeolite-style infill that traps ammonia so urine flushes through instead of sitting in the pile. Playground areas need an infill matched to the pad and to the fall height the surfacing system is rated for. Crumb rubber is the option that draws the most public comment, and there are non-crumb alternatives if your board would rather not have that conversation at a council meeting. Tell us the use and we will price the infill options side by side, each one with the manufacturer's own data attached.
Far less than a mowed lawn, but not zero, and you should budget for it rather than be surprised by it. There is no mowing, no irrigation, no fertilizer and no reseeding, which is where the savings against your annual line item come from. What stays is light and predictable: brushing the high-traffic lanes so the fibers stand back up, blowing off leaves and litter, topping up infill where foot traffic moves it, and rinsing pet and event areas. Public sites add two jobs a private yard does not have. Someone has to check seams and perimeter anchoring after heavy use, and someone has to deal with vandalism, cuts and burn spots. Both are patch repairs rather than replacements, and we can set the site up with a repair plan and matching material held back for it.
PFAS is a fair question and it now comes up in almost every public procurement. We install turf, we do not manufacture it, so we are not going to make a claim about what is or is not in a product on our own authority. What we will do is name the exact turf and infill in the submittal, then get you the manufacturer's material documentation for that specific product, including whatever PFAS statement or test data they publish. If your purchasing policy requires a signed material disclosure, tell us before the specification is written so we can steer you to a product whose maker will provide one. End of life works the same way. We will ask the manufacturer what takeback or recycling program exists for the product you are considering and give you their answer, not ours.

From Start to Finish.
Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

There is no single square-foot price for public work, and any number quoted before someone has read your specification is a guess. A public site carries costs a private yard does not: deeper or engineered base, shock pad and fall-height surfacing where there is play equipment, heavier edge and perimeter anchoring for unsupervised use, prevailing wage on public works contracts, and bonding and insurance. We measure the site, price to the specification you hand us, and break the number into line items your budget office and your engineer can both check.

How Hot Does Artificial Turf Get In A Houston Summer?
Hotter than the grass beside it, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Synthetic turf in full sun reaches surface temperatures above both natural grass and the air around it. That is well documented, and it is the first thing a resident will raise at a public meeting. We will not print a peak temperature or a cooling percentage here, because those numbers only mean anything when they come from the manufacturer's own published testing for the product you are actually buying.
