Two Lots, One Street, Different Drainage in Cypress
Cypress does not sit on the black gumbo clay people expect from Houston. The common soils here are Hockley, Wockley and Gessner, and they run in a sequence across the landscape. Hockley sits on the high ground and drains well. Wockley sits lower, drains slowly, and stays saturated for three to six weeks in winter and spring. Gessner fills the enclosed low spots and can pond from November through May. Your neighbor’s yard and your yard may not behave the same way at all.
All three share one trait that matters for turf: a sandy loam surface over a much tighter clay subsoil. Water moves through the first foot, then stalls at the clay. A base that ignores that layer traps water right under the new surface. Cypress also drains into the Cypress Creek watershed, which covers 267 square miles and holds about 250 miles of open stream channel, so heavy rain has a long way to travel before it leaves the area.

Drainage below the clay break
The sandy top layer drains and the clay under it does not. We excavate past that break, compact a graded aggregate base, and give the water a path out instead of letting it pool under the turf.

Does Cypress have its own rules about artificial turf?
Cypress is unincorporated, so there is no city government and no municipal landscaping ordinance. Permitting for unincorporated areas runs through the Harris County Office of the County Engineer. For most Cypress homeowners the binding rules are their deed restrictions and their HOA guidelines. We ask about both on the first visit so the install matches what your community allows.
My back yard stays wet for weeks and my neighbor’s dries out. Why?
That is normal here. Cypress soils run in a sequence from well drained on the high ground to poorly drained in the low spots, and lot lines do not follow it. If your yard sits at the lower end, water perches on the clay below and sits there. We grade and drain the base for how your lot behaves, not for a Cypress average.
Which side of Cypress Creek am I on, and does it matter?
Cypress Creek splits the community, and the whole area drains into its watershed. It matters less for which side you are on than for how close your lot sits to a low point or a drainage channel. Harris County Flood Control District publishes a per-address floodplain lookup, and we recommend checking yours before any yard work.
How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.

How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
