A bocce court is a small amenity that gets used more than most of the expensive ones. It fits a brewery patio, an HOA green, an apartment amenity deck, a club lawn or a corporate campus break area. The game takes two minutes to learn, players stand around the court with a drink in hand, and Houston winters rarely shut it down, so the court works twelve months a year. The hard part is not the game. It is building something long, narrow and dead flat on Gulf Coast ground and keeping it flat.
That is why most of the work happens before the surface goes down. We strip the grass and topsoil, cut to depth, lay geotextile separation fabric, compact a crushed limestone base and grade it flat. Harris County sits on heavy Beaumont clay that swells, shrinks and takes water slowly, and a court this shape shows every bit of that movement, so we build perimeter drainage in rather than hoping the ground cooperates. Then the frame and rails go in, and the court gets finished in crushed oyster shell or in short, dense bocce turf dressed with sand.
What Can I Expect From Bocce Court Turf in Houston?
There is no single governing standard for bocce court size, so the honest answer is that it depends on the league or club you play under. Regulation courts are commonly built at around 13 feet by 91 feet, but leagues differ and that figure is not a rule of the game. Most hospitality, HOA and apartment courts are built shorter on purpose, because a full-length court eats a lot of patio. It depends on the court footprint and how thick the shell layer is spread, so it is a volume calculation rather than a fixed number of bags. Crushed shell is a thin wearing course over a compacted base, and it gets topped up over time as play and rain move it around. That is the part most buyers miss: the first delivery is not the last one. Shell needs raking, rolling and periodic top-dressing to keep a true surface, and Gulf Coast rain speeds that cycle up. We price the shell volume off your measured layout, and we will show you what a turf surface costs to keep as well, so you can compare the whole cost and not just the first invoice.
Not directly. The grass and the topsoil have to come out first. Anything organic left under a court breaks down and settles, and a settled court plays crooked no matter how good the surface on top of it is. We strip the sod, cut to depth, lay separation fabric over the clay, then compact a crushed aggregate base and grade it flat. On Houston ground we also work out where the water goes before we build, because a court dropped on a lawn that already puddles turns into a long, narrow puddle. The lawn around the court can stay natural grass, or we can turf it so the whole area matches.
Shorter courts are legitimate, and most amenity courts are shorter. Recreational and backyard courts are commonly built somewhere around 10 to 13 feet wide by 60 to 76 feet long, and taprooms, clubs and apartment communities often go shorter still to fit the patio they have. A short court plays fine for casual and social league games; it just changes how far players throw. Hold the width before you cut the length, because a narrow court makes bank shots off the rails awkward. We mark the footprint out on site so you can stand in it and see the space before anything gets dug.

From Start to Finish.
Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

A bocce court is priced as a build, not by the square foot, so we will not put a single number on it before we have seen the site. What drives your cost is how much soil comes out, how much drainage the ground needs, the rails and edging you pick, and whether you finish in crushed shell or in turf. A flat, well drained spot costs less than a low corner sitting on heavy clay. We measure on site and put the whole scope in writing, for free.

Oyster Shell vs Turf: Which Bocce Court Surface Plays Better?
Neither surface wins on every measure, so pick the one that matches how the court will be looked after. Freshly groomed crushed oyster shell plays fast and gives you the traditional look and sound, but it needs raking, rolling and topping up, and heavy rain moves it around. Short-pile bocce turf dressed with sand plays the same way week after week and asks for almost no upkeep, which is why most bars, HOAs and apartment communities choose it. If you have grounds staff who will groom a court, shell is a real option. If nobody is paid to groom it, turf is the honest answer.

How It Plays
Does a Turf Bocce Court Roll True? Ball Speed and Court Consistency
Yes, as long as the court is built for bocce and not just covered in landscape grass. A true roll comes from the base, not from the carpet, so the flat, compacted, laser-graded base under the surface is what keeps a ball tracking straight. On top of that, a short, dense pile dressed with sand holds the fibers upright and keeps the speed steady from one end of the court to the other. Turf usually plays a little slower than freshly groomed shell, so we set pile height and sand volume around how fast you want the court to play.
The Base Sets the Truth
We excavate, lay separation fabric over the clay, compact a crushed limestone base, then grade it flat. Any high spot left in the base shows up later as a ball that drifts.
Pile and Sand Set the Speed
A short, dense pile with sand infill controls how fast the ball runs and stops the fibers laying over. We set both to the speed you want before anything is ordered.

How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
What is included in your warranty?
Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.
Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
