A batting cage wears in patches, not evenly. The batter's box, the landing area in front of the mound and the spot the pitching machine sits on absorb nearly every rep, while the far end of the tunnel stays close to new. Houston makes that schedule heavier than it is elsewhere. Daily highs sit at or above 90 degrees for most of June through September, so travel clubs, academies and school programs push hitting indoors and the cage runs close to year round.
We plan the floor around the cage, not the other way around. We measure the tunnel, check the slab for flatness and moisture or the ground for grade and drainage, mark every net and frame anchor point, then lay the rolls so no seam lands in the box. Here is the line on scope, stated plainly: we install batting cage floors, bullpen surfaces and the turf skin over a mound somebody else built. We do not build or supply mounds, and we do not hang or anchor netting, frames or cage hardware. Those come from your cage, netting and mound suppliers, and we work around their anchor points and their schedule. Our shop is on Campbell Road in Spring Branch, off I-10 inside Beltway 8, near the warehouse and flex space most Houston hitting facilities rent.
What Can I Expect From Batting Cage Turf in Houston?
We plan the turf around the anchor points instead of cutting to fit afterwards. Cage frames and netting get anchored to the slab or hung from the building structure, and those points are set by your cage or netting supplier. Before any turf goes down we mark where every post and floor anchor lands, then lay the rolls so the cuts fall in a clean, finished line around them. To be clear about who does what: we install and finish the turf, and we do not supply, hang or anchor netting, frames or cage hardware. Tell us your cage supplier's schedule and we will sequence the two jobs in the right order.
Start with the cage footprint, then add a working margin on all sides so hitters and coaches are not stepping off the edge. We will not quote you a standard cage size, because cages are not standard: length, width and net height change by manufacturer and by whether you are hitting baseball or softball. Get the frame dimensions from your cage supplier and we will measure the room and confirm the turf area on site. Ceiling height matters for the cage, not for the floor. Your building's clear height caps how tall the net can hang, and in a converted warehouse it can also limit how we move full rolls into the room, so tell us about it early.
Yes. A portable mound sits on the turf surface, and plenty of facilities work that way so the tunnel can switch between machine work and live arms. TNT Turf does not build, supply or sell mounds of any kind, portable or permanent. What we control is the floor underneath. We can hold that area flat so the mound does not rock, keep seams out of the landing spot in front of it, and lay the section that takes the pounding so it can be lifted and replaced on its own later. If you already have a permanent mound built, we can surface it with turf.
Nylon and polyethylene are two different plastics used to make turf fiber, and both turn up in cage floors. Rather than repeat a general rule about which one wins, we put the manufacturer's spec sheet for each option in front of you and match it to how your cage actually gets used: hours per week, machine or live arms, cleats or trainers, indoors or under cover. Fiber shape, backing and whether the floor runs infilled or non-infill matter as much as the plastic does. We work with Shaw Sports Turf among other manufacturers, and we will tell you exactly which fiber the product we quote uses.

Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

How Much Does Batting Cage Turf Cost To Install?
We do not publish a flat per square foot price for batting cage turf, because a cage floor is priced by what happens under the turf as much as by the grass on top. An indoor tunnel bonded to a clean slab, an outdoor cage on a fresh compacted base, and a padded plate area all price differently, even inside the same facility. We measure the space, look at the slab or the ground, and put the real number in writing before any work starts.

Bullpen Surfaces
Turf Mound Or Real Clay: Which Is Better for a Bullpen?
It depends on who throws in the pen and who maintains it. A clay mound is the game surface and it takes a dug landing area the way a real mound does, but it needs tamping, patching and regular clay work to stay true. A turf-covered mound holds its shape on its own and asks for almost no upkeep, which is why indoor pens and shared training space often go that way. TNT Turf handles only the turf side of that choice: we surface a mound that is already built or supplied by your mound supplier, and we do not build, shape or sell mounds ourselves.

How Long It Lasts
How Long Does Batting Cage Turf Last Before the Plate Area Wears Out?
The plate area wears out well before the rest of the tunnel does, and that is normal. Wear in a cage is concentrated instead of spread out: the batter's box, the landing area in front of the mound and the pitching machine's footprint take nearly every rep, while the far end of the tunnel stays close to new. How long you get comes down to the product you start with, how the slab and the seams were prepped, and whether the pile gets swept and brushed on a schedule.
Wear Lands in One Spot
The box, the landing area and the machine footprint absorb almost all of it. The far end of the tunnel usually still looks new when those spots are finished.
Plan a Replaceable Section
We can lay the rolls so the plate area sits on its own piece. When it goes, that section comes out on its own instead of the whole cage floor.
Brushing Is Most of the Job
Sweep the dirt and ball scuff out of the pile, then brush the box back upright. Fiber left flat and full of grit gives up sooner, and metal cleats should stay off an indoor floor.

How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
What is included in your warranty?
Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.
Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
How much does an artificial turf installation cost?
