Artificial turf for schools has to answer to more people than a back yard does. Facilities has to maintain it, athletics has to schedule on it, and purchasing has to buy it through a path the district can defend. We work in that order. We walk the site with your facilities team, look at where the water actually goes, measure the space, and write the scope in enough detail that it can go into a competitive bid package, an RFP, or whichever purchasing route your district already uses. The build solves the ground first. Gulf Coast clay sheds water instead of taking it, so the aggregate base and the drainage under a field matter more here than they do in a dry market. We excavate, build and compact the base, set the drainage, lay the shock pad where the spec calls for one, then seam and infill the turf and inlay the lines and logos. Crews clear the background check and insurance requirements your campus sets, sign in the way your district requires, and work to a window you choose, which for most districts means starting after the last day of school and finishing before fall athletics begin. You get one point of contact for the facilities office from the site visit through the punch list.
What Can I Expect From School Turf in Houston?
A synthetic surface does run hotter than grass on a sunny August afternoon, and any installer who tells you otherwise is selling. Districts manage it the same way they manage heat on a track or a parking lot: water the surface before practice, move the hardest work to early morning or evening, keep hydration and shade close by, and choose a lighter-colored infill where the budget allows. We will walk your athletics staff through the heat plan for the system you are looking at before you buy it, not after.
The safest play area is a turf system with a shock pad sized to the fall height of the equipment above it. That pad, not the grass fibers, is what absorbs a fall. Play surfacing is specified against ASTM F1292 for impact attenuation and critical fall height, and the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook is the reference your facilities staff already knows. We spec the pad to the equipment on your campus, and the finished surface stays firm and level for wheelchairs and walkers, where wood fiber and pea gravel scatter and leave holes.
Less than grass, but not none, and any district that plans for zero will be disappointed. A turf field needs regular brushing to keep the fibers standing, infill leveled in high-traffic areas like goal mouths and hash marks, debris and leaves cleared, and periodic impact testing on athletic surfaces. Seams, inlays and the perimeter get checked at the same time. We hand the maintenance schedule to your facilities team at closeout and train them on it, so the work stays in-house if that is how your district prefers to run it.
Three, and they should be in the board presentation. The surface is hotter on summer afternoons than grass, the money is spent up front instead of spread across mowing seasons, and the carpet is a wearing part that will be replaced at the end of its service life while the base stays. Turf also does not fix a bad base, so a field that drains poorly today will drain poorly under turf if the drainage is value-engineered out of the scope. Knowing all three going in is what keeps a project from souring two years later.

A Simple Process
From Start to Finish.
Our proven installation process ensures every project is completed efficiently with exceptional attention to detail.
We strip the existing lawn and excavate down to a clean, stable sub-grade. Old roots, thatch, and loose topsoil all come out, because anything organic left behind will settle later and telegraph through the finished turf.
Flexible poly board is staked around the entire perimeter to lock the base in place. It holds your shape through curves and radii, keeps the aggregate from migrating into beds, and gives the turf a clean edge to be fastened to.
The first base layer goes down and is graded for drainage. This is the load-bearing course that carries foot traffic and keeps the surface from rutting, and it is where the finished contours of the yard are established.
A second, finer layer is screeded over the first to true the surface. Two layers instead of one is what separates a lawn that stays flat for years from one that dips and waves after the first wet season.
The base is plate-compacted to spec, then the turf is rolled out, allowed to relax, and cut to the yard. Seams are aligned to a single blade direction and joined so they disappear, and the turf is nailed off along every edge.
Silica infill is spread and worked in with a power broom, lifting every blade upright as it goes. Infill is what gives the lawn its ballast, its underfoot feel, and its ability to stand back up after traffic.
We do a final groom, clear the site, and walk the finished yard with you edge to edge. What you are left with is a lawn that looks cut every day of the year, with no mowing, watering, or seasonal brown-out.

How Much Does a School Turf Field Cost?
There is no list price for a school field, and any figure you find online is a guess until someone has measured your site. The number is driven by the size of the area, what has to come out first, how much drainage the ground under it needs, and the turf system your district specs. We price it after a site visit and put the full scope in writing so it can be compared line by line against other bids.
Districts usually fund this work through a bond program or the facilities budget, so we can break an estimate out by field, by campus, or by phase to fit either one. The site visit and the estimate are free, and the scope we hand you is the same document your purchasing office can attach to a bid.

How Long Does a School Turf Field Last?
Service life comes down to three things: the base under the field, the hours a week it is used, and whether it is maintained. The carpet is the part that wears out, not the base your district paid to build, so the second surface costs less than the first. Ask every bidder for the manufacturer's warranty in writing, along with the usage hours it assumes, and compare those documents rather than the sales sheet.

Turf vs. Natural Grass
Is Turf or Natural Grass Better for a District Field?
It depends on how many hours a week the field has to take. Natural grass is a fine surface for a field with light use, a grounds crew and a rest schedule to match. Once one field is carrying PE classes, band, two or three sports and community use, Houston rain and heavy clay make grass very hard to keep playable, and that is where turf starts to earn its cost.
Playable Hours
Grass needs rest to recover, so a single field gets rotated and rationed. Turf takes back-to-back periods, and the schedule stops being built around the grass.
Rain Recovery
Houston gets close to 50 inches of rain a year, and Gulf Coast clay holds it. A turf field on a proper drainage base is usable again soon after the storm, where grass stays soft for days.

How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
What is included in your warranty?
Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.
Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
