The patio is set out as a diamond lattice — travertine paving with turf strips running through it on the diagonal, carried from the open terrace by the pool through to the covered seating area with the wicker lounge chairs.

A diagonal pattern is considerably harder to build than a square one, because every strip meets the stone at an angle and every intersection has to line through. It is set out from a single datum across the whole terrace, and each strip is based and anchored so the geometry does not drift as the ground settles.
