Formal Houston gardens, kept green without a sprinkler head in sight.

Formal Lawns and a
Fountain Courtyard in Tanglewood
Tanglewood gardens are formal and heavily shaded, which is exactly the combination natural grass handles worst — deep tree canopy, clipped hedge lines and an expectation that the lawn is a flat green plane. These installations replace that plane with turf that holds its colour under the canopy and keeps a hard, straight edge against the hedging.
Each of these lawns is cut to a shape rather than laid to a rectangle: around a fountain plinth, into a hedge line, along a stone terrace. The turf is anchored at every one of those edges and the pile direction is set consistently across the whole lawn, so it reads as one surface from the house rather than as panels.
