Large stone treads step up from the street to the front door with turf between and either side of them, lit by low path lighting, with new lawn taken out to the planting beds on both sides.

A front approach is judged from a distance, so the treads have to line through and the spacing has to be even the whole way up — it is the first thing the eye picks up as you walk it. Each tread is bedded and each turf joint cut to it, with the surrounding lawn laid to meet the same level so nothing catches a shoe.
