Yards Rebuilt Along
Dickinson Bayou
Dickinson sits on Dickinson Bayou in Galveston County, and Hurricane Harvey put water into roughly eighty percent of it in 2017. Around seven thousand structures were affected. Much of what you see driving through town today was rebuilt after that, and a good deal of it was rebuilt higher. We have worked Greater Houston yards for more than 30 years.
Your first visit is free. We measure the yard, look at where water actually sits after a storm, and hand you a fixed written quote before any work starts. Then we excavate, compact a graded aggregate base with drainage set, lay the turf, and secure the seams and edging. On this ground the base decides the outcome.

The Town That Harvey Nearly Took
Dickinson Bayou runs straight through town and drains a flat, low watershed with nowhere to send water quickly. During Harvey the bayou and the rainfall arrived together, and about seven thousand structures across the city were damaged, homes and businesses both. The city has been chasing capacity ever since, including a $49.3 million award to expand the sewer systems along Hughes and Deats roads so water reaches the bayou faster and detention sits away from houses.
The rebuild changed the ground itself. Houses were raised, air conditioning units went up on stands, and generators were added. Lifting a house does not lift the lawn, so the yard is often left low around a new slab or new piers. That pocket holds water long after the rain quits, and sod planted in it stays thin and muddy. We cut, fill, and compact to a planned grade first, then build the drainage into the base.
Low ground around a lifted home
Raising a house after 2017 left the ground beside it sitting low. We survey the lot, cut and fill to a planned fall, then compact the base so water moves off rather than pooling at the slab.
A bayou that fills and empties slowly
Dickinson Bayou serves flat country, so a heavy rain sits on the land. A permeable base with drainage set into it means the surface is walkable again well before the bare ground beside it is.
Edging anchored for moving water
Fast sheet flow is what lifts a poorly fixed corner. We secure the perimeter edging and every seam so a storm does not peel the turf back at the edge.

Frequently asked,
clearly answered.
My street flooded in Harvey. Does artificial turf make that worse?
No. Turf is not a slab. It sits on a permeable, compacted base with drainage built into it, so water passes through rather than sheeting off. What decides the result on a Dickinson lot is where that water goes next, which is why we spend the free visit reading the fall of the yard before we quote anything.
Does turf survive being underwater?
The turf itself does. Synthetic fiber does not rot or drown the way sod does, and it does not need reseeding after a flood. Rinse the silt off and cross-brush the pile once it drains. The part that matters is the base and the edging underneath, which is why we compact properly and anchor the perimeter rather than pinning it loosely.
Do I need a permit or a floodplain review in Dickinson?
Ask the city before you plan anything that changes site levels. Dickinson runs its own permitting and sits in a heavily mapped flood area, and fill or regrading that alters how water leaves a lot is treated differently from a flat, at-grade replacement. We confirm the scope with the city rather than assuming a turf job is exempt.
How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
What is included in your warranty?
Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.
Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
How much does an artificial turf installation cost?
Pricing depends on square footage, the turf you choose, and how much prep the site needs. We measure on site and give you a fixed written quote before any work starts.
