Foot Traffic, Oak-Lined University Drive, and Waller County Soil
University Drive runs about a mile from Old Highway 290 into the campus under mature oaks, and it functions as the city’s main street. The Central Business District study area sits just south of the university, bordered by Owens Road, Highway 290, Santee Street and Sandra Bland Parkway, and the city is pushing development that people can reach on foot or by bike. Walkable frontage is exactly the ground where grass wears to dirt first.
Underneath, this is Waller County prairie, mostly sandy loam rather than the heavy black clay people associate with Houston. It sheds surface water faster than gumbo but compacts hard under repeated footfall, which is why worn paths across a courtyard never come back. Turf over a compacted graded base takes that traffic without a bare track forming, and holds color through the summer with no irrigation running.

Do you handle larger institutional and campus turf projects in Prairie View?

Is the ground in Prairie View the same heavy clay as Houston?
Generally no. Waller County soils are largely sandy loam across the prairie, with fertile alluvial soil in the Brazos bottoms to the west and black waxy clay only in a small southern area. Sandy loam drains faster at the surface but compacts hard under traffic. That means a base built for gumbo is the wrong answer here, so we check the soil on your property before we spec it.
Can turf survive a full academic year of student foot traffic?
That is what it is built for. Sports and landscape turf is specified by pile weight and backing for exactly this kind of repeated use, and the compacted base under it stops the surface from rutting. The wear pattern that kills sod, the same line walked a thousand times, does not show on a properly installed turf lawn. Cross-brushing high-traffic paths keeps the fibers standing.

Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
