Behind the
Texas City Levee

Texas City is a working industrial city on Galveston Bay, built around refineries, tank farms, and the port. It is also one of the few places in the region that lives behind a levee. The hurricane flood protection system guards about 36 square miles of the Texas City, La Marque, and Hitchcock area from a 15 foot storm surge with waves on top of it.

Yards here take salt-carrying wind off the bay, industrial dust, and heavy summer sun, and turf does not brown out under any of it. Your first visit is free. We measure, check how the ground drains, and give you a fixed written quote before work starts. More than 30 years of Greater Houston installs stands behind the base we build.

Inside the Levee Ring

A City That Stopped Sinking on Purpose

The levee is not decoration. Construction started in 1962 under the Flood Control Act of 1958 and was completed in April 1987, and the levee stands 21 feet high. In 1982 the city added an inner levee eight feet high at Moses Lake with Archimedes screw pumps behind it. Living inside a ring like that means rain falling on the protected side has to be pumped out rather than simply running to the bay, so what your own lot does with water carries real weight.

Texas City also has a subsidence history, and it dealt with the cause directly. Sinking ground was one of the reasons the city flooded, so it stopped pumping groundwater and switched its industries onto Brazos River water. The Legislature created the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District in 1975 to regulate groundwater withdrawal across both counties for the same reason. Ground that has settled unevenly leaves low spots in a yard, and a compacted, graded base is how those get taken out.

  • Rain has to be pumped out

Inside a levee ring water does not simply run to the bay. We build fall and drainage into the base so your yard is not the low point sitting there waiting on a pump.

  • Salt wind off the bay

Bay wind carries salt inland, and salt slows and discolors natural grass over a season. Synthetic fiber does not take it up, so the color holds through the year.

  • Plant offices and commercial frontage

Contractor yards, plant offices, and retail sites here need green that survives traffic without an irrigation budget. We scope that on the same free visit as a home yard.

FAQ

Frequently asked,
clearly answered.

Does living behind the Texas City levee change how a yard should drain?

It raises the stakes. The levee system protects about 36 square miles from a 15 foot surge, but water falling inside that protected area cannot run out to the bay on its own and has to be pumped. That means a yard that ponds stays ponded longer than it would elsewhere. We plan the fall and the base drainage with that in mind.

Has subsidence left low spots in yards here?

Settlement is part of this city's history. Sinking ground contributed to its flooding, which is why Texas City stopped pumping groundwater and moved its industry onto Brazos River water, and why the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District was created in 1975. Where ground has settled unevenly, we survey the lot, cut and fill to a planned grade, and compact the base so the surface reads level again.

Will salt and industrial air hurt artificial turf here?

No. Turf has no roots taking anything up, so airborne salt and dust sit on the surface and rinse off with a hose. Natural grass near the bay is a different story, because salt in the soil interferes with how the plant takes in water and nutrients, which shows up as slow growth and discoloration long before anything looks dramatic.

How long does an installation take?

Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.

What is included in your warranty?

Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.

Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?

Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.

How much maintenance does artificial turf need?

A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.

Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?

Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.

How much does an artificial turf installation cost?

Pricing depends on square footage, the turf you choose, and how much prep the site needs. We measure on site and give you a fixed written quote before any work starts.
