Tomball surprises people who expect the cracking black clay of inner Houston. The dominant soil in and around the built-up city is Wockley, a fine sandy loam for the first 22 inches that does not crack and swell the way heavy clay does. Below that it turns to a much denser layer that water barely moves through, so rain soaks in quickly and then perches. Elsewhere around Tomball, deep loamy fine sands such as the Kenney and Boy soils take over and drain fast. A yard on one edge of town can behave nothing like a yard on the other. Water leaving Tomball splits two ways. Roughly half the city drains to Willow Creek and the other half to Spring Creek, which forms the northern Harris County line and stays largely a natural channel with limited capacity. The Flood Control District notes that flooding in this part of the county happens next to the tributaries rather than along the main channel. Sheet flow across a yard is the everyday problem, not the river.

Do I need a permit from the City of Tomball for artificial turf?

Is Tomball soil the same heavy clay as the rest of Houston?
No, and this is a real difference. The common soil across built-up Tomball is a sandy loam with low shrink-swell, not the cracking clay found closer in. The catch is the layer underneath, which is dense and slow, so water drains through the top two feet and then stops. We excavate past that point and build drainage into the base rather than assuming the sand will handle it.
Which watershed is my Tomball property in?
About half of Tomball drains to Willow Creek and about half to Spring Creek. Willow Creek runs into Spring Creek upstream of I-45. The Spring Creek channel is largely natural, which means a broad floodplain and limited capacity, and most local flooding happens along the smaller tributaries rather than the main creek.
