A Lawn That Takes
Island Salt Air
Galveston is a barrier island and it behaves like one. The dominant soils on the island, the Galveston and Mustang series, are wind-blown fine sands that hold almost no nutrients. Water passes through the sand fast, but the water table sits close to the surface here, often within a foot or two, so a sandy lot is not the same as a free-draining one. Add salt spray off the Gulf and a steady salt-laden wind, and a natural lawn here is fighting conditions no warm-season grass was bred for.
That is the honest reason turf sells on the island. Salt does not fade it, sand does not starve it, and an owner who lives elsewhere does not have to send a mower. Your first visit is free. We measure, check how the site drains, and issue a fixed written quote before work begins. More than 30 years of Greater Houston installs stands behind the base.

Sand, Salt, and a Seawall Built in 1902
The island's defenses are old and plainly visible. Seawall construction began in September 1902 after the 1900 storm, the first section was finished in July 1904, and it now runs about 10 miles at roughly 17 feet high and 16 feet thick at the base. The island sits in the windborne debris region, so building here is designed and certified for coastal wind, and homes near the water sit elevated on piers with the yard tucked around and under them.
Who owns the yard matters just as much. Galveston had more than 4,400 registered short-term rentals as of 2023, and tourism drives well over a billion dollars of local economic activity. An owner living in Houston or Austin wants a small yard that photographs well every week of the year without scheduling a mower at a house nobody is staying in that day. Turf does that, and the sand under it drains fast enough that a rinse is most of the upkeep.
Salt spray does not fade it
Salt in the air and in the soil stunts natural grass and discolors it over time. Synthetic fiber does not take salt up, so the color in June matches the color in January.
Sand under the base, not clay
Island sand drains fast and holds no nutrients, which is why sod starves here. We compact a graded aggregate base over it so the surface stays firm and level instead of rutting.
The ground beneath an elevated house
Homes near the water sit on piers, and the space below is shaded, sandy, and hard to grow anything in. Turf finishes it and keeps loose sand off the stairs and out of the house.

Frequently asked,
clearly answered.
Does salt air damage artificial turf?
No. Salt harms natural grass because the plant takes it up through the roots and the osmotic effect leaves it dehydrated and discolored. Synthetic fiber has no roots and no water uptake, so salt spray simply sits on the surface until rain or a hose rinses it off. On an island lot that is the single biggest practical advantage turf has over sod.
I rent my Galveston house out. Is turf worth it for a rental?
It is a maintenance decision more than a looks decision. A rental yard has to be presentable on turnover day every week, which is hard to guarantee with a mowing schedule at a property you do not live at. Turf holds the same appearance year round with no watering, no seasonal brown-out, and no crew visit needed between guests.
Will turf hold up to storm surge or a flooded yard here?
The turf and the infill are not damaged by salt water, and the base is permeable, so it drains rather than holding a pond. The vulnerable part is always the edge. We anchor the perimeter and the seams properly, and on exposed island lots we plan the base and the tie-downs for water that arrives with force, not for a calm year.
How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
What is included in your warranty?
Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.
Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
How much does an artificial turf installation cost?
Pricing depends on square footage, the turf you choose, and how much prep the site needs. We measure on site and give you a fixed written quote before any work starts.
