Meyerland was built out of about 1,200 acres of former rice fields starting in 1955, and much of it is still the mid-century ranch housing from those years, often on the roomy lots that era favored. It sits inside the City of Houston rather than being its own city, so permitting and floodplain review run through Houston Public Works. We have installed turf across this region for more than 30 years.
The free visit does more work than usual here. We measure, read the fall of the lot, and look at what a rebuild or a house elevation did to your grade. You get a fixed written quote before we begin, and it does not move once we start. On a Meyerland lot, planning where water goes is the whole job.

The Most Flood-Defined Yards in Houston
Meyerland sits partly inside the 100-year floodplain along Brays Bayou, and it flooded in three events in three years: Memorial Day 2015, Tax Day 2016, and Harvey in 2017. Harris County Flood Control has spent heavily on the answer. Project Brays widened and deepened about 21 miles of the bayou at a cost near $480 million, and the first phase of the Meyergrove detention basin was completed in December 2024, with a second phase still in the works. None of that makes a slow-draining back yard drain.
The rebuild that followed changed the ground itself. Homes across Meyerland were raised several feet above base flood elevation, some on new raised garages. Lifting a house does not lift the lawn, so the yard is left sitting low around it, and that pocket is where water now stands. We cut and fill to a planned grade, then compact an aggregate base with drainage set, so the surface is usable again soon after a storm.

Elevating a home leaves the ground around it below the old line. We regrade that pocket so water runs away from the foundation instead of collecting against it.
Coverage limits your association counts
The Meyerland association caps hard coverage at 60 percent of the lot and counts non-natural ground surfaces toward it. We size the turf area with that worksheet in front of us.

Does the Meyerland Community Improvement Association have to approve turf?
Assume yes. The association’s own policy is that all exterior work on your property requires written approval before the work begins. Meyerland covers roughly 2,400 homes across 22 sections, and the restrictions differ from section to section, so your neighbor’s answer may not be yours. Read your section’s document and submit before you schedule anything.
Does artificial turf count against Meyerland’s 60 percent coverage cap?
The association bans artificial turf forward of the front building line and toward a side street, and allows it in the back yard. Even in back, it can count toward your lot’s 60 percent impervious coverage cap. So plan turf for the back yard, ask the association for the coverage figure in writing before you fix the square footage, and we will size the plan around it.
My house was raised after Harvey. How does that change the yard?
Quite a lot. Raising the house leaves the surrounding ground low, so water pools where the old grade used to shed it. Before turf goes down we survey the lot, cut the high spots, fill the low ones, and compact a graded base with drainage set. The leveling happens under the turf, which is why the base takes most of the labor.
How long does an installation take?
Most residential projects are complete in 2–4 days. Larger commercial installs typically take 1–2 weeks.
What is included in your warranty?
Every install carries the manufacturer's product warranty against fading and wear, plus our own workmanship coverage on seams, edging, and base. Full terms come with your proposal.
Is artificial turf safe for pets and children?
Yes. We install lead-free, non-toxic turf over a permeable base that drains quickly, and we can add an antimicrobial infill for pet areas to keep odours down.
How much maintenance does artificial turf need?
A rinse now and then and an occasional cross-brush of the high-traffic paths. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser, and no seasonal brown-out.
Will the turf get too hot in the Houston sun?
Turf runs warmer than a natural lawn in direct sun. We specify cooler yarn and lighter infill where a yard gets full afternoon exposure, and a quick rinse brings the surface temperature straight back down.
